January 29, 2012
We saw the first sleds on the lake this weekend. The lakes have been fairly slushy because of all the fluctuating temps this year. Several vehicles and snowmobiles have gone through on Lake Nipissing already. Better to err on the careful side.
January 21, 2012
Beautiful day here today, it warmed up to zero. Better than the -27C it was a couple days ago. Phil is touching up the road with the tractor today, or should I say playing. It has been a job keeping on top of things this year.

Wow, you know you live in the North when its cool to wear your parka and snowmobile boots and tuke everywhere in public. Yesterday a storm came through and dumped over a foot of snow on the region. I was in North Bay and had to spend the night. It all fell in just a matter of hours. Anyone want to help shovel off the cottages roofs? I think we'll keep Phil off them though!
January 14, 2012
We had 4-5 inches of fresh white stuff over the last couple of days. Last night it was -25C with the wind chill -39C. yikes. Still have not seen any sleds on the lake, I don't know what they are waiting for now. People are driving vehicles on Lake Nipissing!
January 8, 2012
Well this winter has certainly been up and down this year. The temps have been back and forth so much and not much snow at all. The lake is frozen and there is about 4-5 inches of ice in the bay and in front of us. But still looks a little unstable off the point and no sleds have been seen on it yet. We always wait for the first few to go out before we do!!!!
January 4, 2012
Happy New Year everyone!!!
Nov 27, 2011
Out for our daily walk the other day we saw a huge Owl hunting along the road. He was perched ever so still on a branch and thanks to Phil's keen eye for wildlife we spotted him. Of course I didn't have my camera but when we got back to the house I grabbed it and was lucky enough that he was still there and I managed to get a few pics. Although it looks similiar to a Barred Owl, we think because of its size and the way it was hunting during the day it must be a Great Grey Owl which I guess is rare to see. It was very cool to see. We often hear them but rarely see them.
Nov 30, 2011
It was a pretty uneventful and quiet November around here, not a speck of snow, until yesterday that is! Its still snowing as I type this. I think we have about 6-8inches so far. It seems to just be snow right now, but yesterday was alternating between freezing rain and snow. Yipee! There always seems to be some things that you say, gee I wish I would have got that done before the snow came.
In other news we are happy to report that we will be adding to our boat rentals next year a 20ft pontoon boat. Which we hope will make it easier for larger families or those wanting a more sturdy and stable boat. This is something we have been wanting to do for a while so we think it will be a nice addition to the resort.
Oct 30, 2011
Wow here we are at the end of October already. Everything is all closed up for the season now. But the office is open year round and we are now taking bookings for the 2012 season. We still have yet to take the last boat out of the water along with the sailboat. We are not ready to pack it all in just yet. Just this morning I took the kayak out for a spin. It was a beautiful morning and one has to take advantage of these things while you can! Happy Holloween!
Oct 10, 2011
Happy Thanksgiving everyone, I hope you had your fill of Family, Friends and Turkey!
Oct 4, 2011
Thanksgiving Weekend is shaping up to be one of the warmest and nicest that we can remember. The weather is calling for a high of 21C!! Near swiming weather!
Oct 2, 2011
What beautiful fall days we are having here. Bright and sunny, lots of colour. The fishing is still great this time of year. We just had some fishermen arrive yesterday and within their fist hour of fishing they caught 3 nice 2-3lb bass.
Sep 28, 2011
The fall colours are at their peak right now, seems ot have happend over night. I will try to post some new pics soon.
Sep 26, 2011
Some newer appliances in cottage #8, #6, #3 and #9b! Lots of fun moving some of those big old fridges out of the cottages, most are too big for the doorway. We were kind of wondering if the cottages were build around the fridges!
And new gazebo for the Tea Time area!
Sep 23, 2011
Movie production continues in the area. James Cromwell and Genevieve Bujold are the main characters in the movie. Great weather here!
Sep 14, 2011
Road construction is now taking place on the stretch of hwy from Port Loring West past us. This is the final leg of the construction. Now there will be all new pavement from us right out to hwy #11. What an improvement this will be!
Sep 12, 2011
The community becomes a movie set! Director Michael McGowen and crew are in the area filming the movie "Still". A house is being built in the area as part of the set and the local car wash and a church have been in alot of scenes so far. Its quite exciting for the communities to be a part of this. We look forward to the movie coming out sometime next year.
Sep 8, 2011
We just had a stretch of cooler days and nights, but nice sunny weather for the rest of the week! I just went for probably my last swim today, I think I jumped out as fast as I jumped in. Water temp is now 69F.
The Durhams and Riverie's are here for the 2nd time this year and just came back from catching a bunch of nice size bass. Two of the 3lb ones were released after the photo opts. Will post the picks shortly.
Sep 2, 2011
Warm and humid weather has moved back in. We went for a swim yesterday. The water temp is about 71F, nice and refreshing. Looks like its going to be a great long weekend here.
Aug 29, 2011
Last Thurs we had a HUGE dump of rain, washed all our roads out and almost sunk the boats. What alot of work. Since then the weather has been real nice. Sunny days, cool evenings. The water temp is cooling, only about 70F now. Still people swiming though.
My niece Geena today caught a 27" Pickerel at 6.5lbs, wow! Her Dad Tim caught two nice 2+lbs large mouth bass. Fishing continues to be good.
Aug 20th, 2011
Cool nights, warm days, warm water, no bugs!!!
Aug 13th, 2011
It finally rained here a bit last Wednesday and is raining again today. Good news for those wanting bon fires. The leaves were drying up on the trees so we are happy to finally get rain. It looks like a great week ahead though with lots of sunshine again.
Aug 9th, 2011
I'm happy to say that the construction on Hwy 522 near Trout Creek is almost all complete. Most of the paving is done, just one bridge still being worked on. So if you are heading up its clear to come that way now.
I'm very excited to finally have figured out how to make a video for the resort. Here is my first attempt, enjoy.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ji-gMBsqnFE
Aug 7th, 2011
Another nice week weatherwise with a great bunch of people in again. Still no rain, there is some in the forecast for later today though. The fishing continues to be good even with water temps about 83F. Our swimming group is in this week, they just love to swim back and forth across the bay. Brian stays out for hours snorkeling. He is a good one for finding things that we have lost in the water.
Don't forget to find us on Facebook!
Aug 1, 2011
Wow Aug already! Another great week of weather here, very little humidity, just nice and warm during the day, cooler at night. Its still very very dry here and we are currently under a fire ban. Hoping to get some rain this week. If you are coming up soon you may want to take Highway #69 up to us as you will find Highway #522 between us and Hwy 11 is all tore up. They are resurfacing the last 30 km's of it and its currently all gravel.
July 28th, 2011
Today is the fishing derby for the kids. There are 11 kids. It should be alot of fun. We have lots of great prizes this year thanks to the judges!
July 27th, 2011
Its been a beautiful week here. Still no rain, its very dry here. Tonight we had a movie night for the kids compliments of Scott as it was his idea to bring a projector and movies for the kids. We set up in the gazebo by the water and it turned out great.
July 25, 2011
It was a perfect night for fireworks off the beach. Thanks to Ron & Lisa who brought a pile of them. We had to wait for a perfectly calm night and shoot them out over the water. Its so dry here, we could be under a fire ban soon.
July 24, 2011
After a sweltering hot week a cool front has finally moved in. Last night temps went down to about 15C and the high today is only going to be 24. A nice welcome change. The lake is going to be warmer than the air now. Lots of kids in this week so we will be having a fishing derby again as well as a few other events planned.
July 17, 2011
Its hot here right now, but we don't have the humidity like in the south. The water temp is 80F and perfect for swimming. You wouldn't think the fishing would be so good with this warm weather but it has absolutely been awesome fishing these last two weeks. Lots of trophy sized Small and Large Mouth Bass being caught and just this evening an 11.5lb Pickerel was caught. The photo is on Photo of the week and then will be under Fish stories after that. It was gently put back after the photo was taken. As this is a prime breeder this is much appreciated.
July 14, 2011,
We have been enjoying really nice sunny weather. The water temp is 79F, very nice for swimming. Fishing is still good, lot of Bass being caught and a nice 18 " pickerel just last night. The kids are enjoying the water slide and the raft. Paddle boats being used on a daily basis too.
July 1, 2011
Happy 144th birthday Canada!
June 17, 2011
Looks like an awesome Father's Day Weekend here. The Sailboat took its maiden voyage yesterday, not much wind but all went well.
June 6, 2011
This week is shaping up to be a lovely week. Even the geese are happy to be here. Two families of geese with 4 babies each have taken over the waterfront. Babies galore around, chipmunks and squirels, beavers and loons.
June 3, 2011
Whew! Just finished doing the roof at cottage #4 today, didn't have a choice as a branch went through it in a recent wind storm. Lots of fun after about 6 layers of shingle to remove and about 500lbs of nails! We are both sitting here trying to decide who's body hurts more right now.
May 30, 2011
Nice calm sunny day, the temp on my deck is 30C!! Great day to finish some of the outdoor work we have been doing. Our nice new swim raft is in place now and looks good. All the docks are fixed up and ready to go. We have been scaping and painting the outside of all the cottages that need it. Next will be the decks and picnic tables. New paint and shelves in cottages #7, #8, and #4, just to name a few things. Yep we have been busy! Off to make some more hummingbird juice, there are alot around!
May 29, 2011
Lots of people asking us if we are getting all the rain that the south is getting and the answer is NO. We have had some, but nothing like southern Ont. The fishing is at its best right now, so what are you waiting for? Get up here and enjoy some sunshine and fishing!
May 21, 2011
Wow what an awesome weekend weatherwise. It could not be more perfect. Yesterday was hot enough to swim and my nephew and one of our guests did. Today is even warmer. Some nice fish have been caught already this morning. Check out photo of the week to see a nice size Lake Trout, a good eating size Pickerel and a Northern Pike caught by the Brunelle party. Way to go guys!
May 20, 2011
Opening day! The weather has been great here the last week and this weekend should be too. The weather is calling for a high of 75 F over the wknd. We just welcomed our first guests a little while ago. The water temp is somewhere between 57-60 F right now. Should be perfect fishing conditions this weekend.
May 14, 2011
Just got back from a 3 wk stint down in SWO looking after some family. Phil has been busy turning on the water in the camp. So begins the big job of spring cleaning all the cottages in preparation for opening weekend May 20th. Looks like the weather is going to be great so the forecast says. We've had some real hot days here the last little while. Today we are having some rain though. That will help to bring out all the leaves on the trees. The trilliums are all in full bloom all over the resort and in the bush. The black flies are out now so if you are coming up for the weekend, bug spray is a good idea. We have some bug gear if you forget yours.
April 20, 2011
Woke up to snow this morning! At least 6 inches has fallen so far and still falling. What the?
April 18, 2011
The Loons have arrived! Today was Phil's birthday and we decided to put a boat in the water and go for our first boat ride. It was a little cool, but nice and sunny. There was only a wee bit of ice still left at the end of the lake.
April 9, 2011
New for this summer, we have just purchased satalite internet which was the only high (highish) speed internet available to our remote area. It comes at a very high price with all kinds of download restrictions. But we have decided to make "limited" access available to our customers wanting to check emails only. We have installed a LAN line in the rec hall and if you have your own laptop you will be able to check your emails. Due to the landscape here wifi will not be available. Downloading of videos and streaming and playing of games will not available. Due to our daily download restrictions we can only allot each cottage a 15 minute usage per day to check important emails. We realize this may not be ideal for alot of people but the alternative before was no internet access at all. There is a public library in town that has free wifi most evenings if people require it for longer periods and for downloading large files.
I have very mixed feelings about internet access. When you are on vacation you are suppose to escape from all of the cell phones, internet, crackberry's etc. But I realize that some people have the need to be in contact with family when away from home and some workaholics can't be without some form of technology and need a little "fix" every now and then. Hopefully this will help.
April 7, 2011
We have been enjoying awesome weather these last few weeks. The snow is almost all gone. The ice on the lake is now very thin with a few open spots. We expect it to go out this coming week with the warm temps.
March 31, 2011
Our email address is changing to info@northernlightsresort.on.ca. The change will be made gradually but please update your address books! Spring is in the air here!
March 2, 2011
The 2011 peak season pricing is now posted on the website! Winter is nearing its end. There is not alot of snow left here, I guess the trails are in poor shape. Still lots of ice on the lake though. We've seen a few people fishing here and there.
February 4, 2011
We can't believe it is Feb already. The winter is flying by for us. Phil is feeding the deer again and there are lots around.
Janurary 2011
Its been a good winter so far. At Christmas we spend 10 days or so down with family. Since then we have been enjoying the winter weather here. Lots of snow, but not a crazy amount. Just enough to keep us busy once in a while plowing and shovelling. Mid January Phil found his claim to fame, by being the very first resident to ride the brand new air ambulance to North Bay. Don't worry he is fine, but it will make for a nice summer campfire story sometime! After that we spent a week in Punta Cana. We loved it and would go back there for sure.
Dec 18, 2010
I had fun plowing the road today with the 4 wheeler. i had never done it before as usually I'm on the shovel as Phil fly's by on the 4 wheeler. Sort of like the summer, only its a golf cart then! Anyways with him away and the snow a fallin, i decided to plow the road. It was pretty fun, now I know why it takes him so long!
Dec 13, 2010
I had to open my mouth and say we didn't have much snow. On the weekend we were hit with a blast. Snowed for 2 days straight. We must have got about 2 ft. It took us forever to dig out. The shovelling of cottage roofs has now begun. Still not as bad as our friends in London and Strathroy, poor people!
Dec 11/2010
Only 14 more days till Christmas! are you ready? I'm not. i'm still trying to get used to the idea that it is Dec already. The lake is almost frozen over now but a long way from being safe. We always wait till the first crazy person goes by on a snowmobile and then we wait another week to be sure.
Recently our computer died and has been laid to rest. We are patiently waiting until all the after Christmas sales come on to get another. For now I am sort of borrowing one.
Today we went for our first snow shoe in the bush. We do not have a ton of snow like London, but maybe about 6 inches or so. Just enough to be pretty in time for the holidays, but not enough to be annoying.
Dec 7, 2010
Here's a favorite subject all across Ontario right now... Time of Use Hydro metering. So, if we all start using hydro more in the off peak time, doing laundry, vacuuming your way through the night etc etc., does that mean that eventually the off peak times will become peak? I hope everyone doesn't mind but we have to follow the lead of Ontario hydro and limit the use of the fridges in the cottages next summer. Each cottage will have a two hour alloted time that they are able to use their fridge each day. Yeah right! kidding...
Nov 25, 2010
Happy Thanksgiving to all our friends from the U.S.A.!! Snow and ice on the way for tonight!
Nov 12, 2010
We have enjoyed a real nice week of weather here. Enjoying every minute of it while it lasts.
Nov 1, 2010
Just back from a long stint down in Chatham taking care of family and attending a wedding. There was a real bad wind storm while we were gone. The rest of the leaves I didn't get raked blew away! Part of our floating dock ended up at the end of the bay. Only one tree down on the road, luckily no other damage. Lots of rain also as the roads were washed out.. But also some hints of snow here and there too.
Oct 21, 2010
All of the cottages are winterized now. Most of the leaves are all raked. Everything all tucked away for the winter. Heading down to Chatham to look after our parents who are not well. First few snow flakes in the air.
Oct 14, 2010
All closed up for the season now. I've started doing alot of the raking of leaves already. The leaves are scarce now. All the boats out of the water except for two. Phil still hoping to get a few sails in before it gets too cold. I'm hoping hoping he doesn't flip it again with the water temps being down, the hypothermia would set in fast!
Oct 10, 2010
We had a very busy Thanksgiving wknd with lots of cottages in. We had a couple of friends up for a big Turkey dinner. The weather was absolutely beautiful.
Sep 30, 2010
I think this has been the wettest September that I ever remember having since we have been here. Cooler temps and lots of rain as it is all over. Finally this week we had some warmer beautiful sunny days. I was able to get out on my kayak and take some pictures of the fall colours. This coming week is promising to be sunny and nice. Phil has started to pull some of the boats out of the water and hopes to shut down cottages 1 thru 4 this week to get a jump on things.
Sep 17, 2010
What an exciting week we have had here at NLR this week. First off the weather has been cooler than normal as with all over. We have some nicer weather on the horizon though.
Phil had an exciting sail last Monday. He had a lesson in what to do if you tip your sail boat in 33km/hr winds with gusts up to 48km/hr. After about 2 hours in the water and fighting high winds with the help of some of our guests we were able to salvage the little Siren, with little damage. Many thanks goes out to Joannie & Brian and to those that braved the cold water, Pete, Yvonne, Mike and Jen. And thanks also to Alec & Tina. Without all you guys helping it could have been a bad situation. As it was no one was hurt, just a little cold and maybe a little "embare assed". Remember what your mother always told you Pete, make sure you always were your good undies, you never know when or who might see them! As for us we have learned alot about what to do if it ever should happen again. By the way, the water temp at the time was about 66 F, but is now down to about 62 F with all the cold nights we have been having. Thanks again everyone!
Sep 6, 2010
Port Loring is putting on an October Fest on Thanksgiving weekend this year. More details to follow.
Sep 5, 2010
Wow, what a change in the temps, one extreme to the other. Down to 7 C the other night. Its suppose to warm back up by Tues. Hope so, we are not ready to turn the furnace on yet.
Sep 1, 2010
I think yesterday had to be the hotest day of the summer! It was too hot to do anything but swim the last few days.
Aug 26, 2010
We are starting to notice some of the maple trees changing colour now. It seems way to early for that. I guess that means we should have a very colourful fall.
Aug 23, 2010
The last two weeks have been fantastic, the evenings are cooler, there are no bugs to speak of. The days are warm and still good for swimming. Water temp is still about 71 degrees F. We thought things would slow down for us this week and next but they are turning out to be quite busy. We seem to be getting alot of last minute bookings. Its looking like sept is going to be quite busy as well.
This week we have people visiting us all the way from England, very nice folks and we are really enjoying them. We also have some celebrity here as well. The writers/producers of the TV Series Flashpoint are here with their family. Its nice having people from all walks of life.
Aug 12, 2010
Hot and Humid. Lots of swimming. We had some folks go back to Etta Lake for the day this week and they came back with there limit in about an hour. We also discovered there are Pickerel back there. They had a nice catch of Perch, Pickerel, and Bass. We also know there are some good sized Pike there as well. It makes a great day trip, its a very pretty lake and very secluded.
Aug 8, 2010
That Pike that was caught the other day was 14lbs. This has been a great week for fishing. The cooler night have dropped the water temp a bit more making the fishing that much better. There is suppose to be more heat and humidity on the way though. Although what Phil and I call humid the people from the south say we are nuts and its nothing compared to what they have back home.
Last night standing on the dock about 10:30pm Phil and I saw the biggest Northern Pike we have ever seen just slowly hovering near the dock probably feeding on the little fish that hide there. We couldn't believe our eyes. It appeared to be somewhere between 3-4ft long. No seriously we weren't even drinking. Since a couple of customers saw it too a few nights before so we know we weren't seeing things! Yikes anyone for an evening swim?
Aug 3, 2010
We had a very busy long weekend here and the weather was beautiful. Not too hot, no humidity. Unfortunately it started raining last night and still is this morning. It is suppose to clear though and be hot and humid again. Can't complain though, we have had great weather so far this summer.
Our Jersey Folks are here for the next two weeks and they sure do know all the fishing hot spots. Yesterday Joe caught a real nice Northern Pike, I have to verify the weight and will report back.
July 27th, 2010
The kids are having a ball this week, I think they have wore a hole in the water slide! The weather has be warm and comfortable. Yesterday we had kayak lessons for the kids. I was racing with one of the boys and managed to tip the kayak!
It is raining this morning but suppose to clear this afternoon. We have decided to have our first ever fishing tournament for the kids today. There will be prizes for all, biggest fish, smallest fish, no fish, prettiest fish, most sportsman like, etc. Should be alot of fun.
July 25th, 2010
We had a 31 1/2" Pickeral caught this week and it was kept. We do not encourage that as this is one of our breeders that will help to repopulate the lake. It is greatly appreciated when these are gently put back into the lake so that fishing can be enjoyed for many years to come. We realize it is very exciting to land one of these big ones, but if everyone did that it will eventually hurt the fish population. So please, take a picture and put it back. nuff said.
July 24th, 2010
This is the week of kids!! 10 children arrived this week on saturday all between the ages of 8-13 and mostly boys. I don't think we have ever had that many at once before. The weather is going to be awesome so there should be some great fun.
July 15, 2010
Another frequently asked question is whether we have Cell service here yet. Currently we do not, however some customers have been receiving intermitant signals here and there. Most people seem to have luck gettng a signal in the town of Port Loring 5km's away. But most people are thankful for the uninterrupted vacation time they experience when they are not disturbed by their cell phones! Isn't that why you come up here, to get away from the hustle bustle, cell phone, wifi, crazy life you lead?
July 14, 2010
A nice thing to do when you are here is to check out the Farmers Market in town on Wed mornings from 9 to 1pm. You have to get there early to get the good produce. They have alot of nice additions to the market this year including a meat vendor. The church next door to the market also puts on a pancake breakfast that morning also.
If you are ever wanting to take a day trip somewhere, please just ask us for some suggestions we would be happy to help!
July 13, 2010
Ah technology, have to love it and hate it. If you are wondering why I haven't posted in a while, I was, but something crashed and my whats new disappeared for a while and now have lost a few posts.
A few things if you are coming up, the highway construction from Arnstein to Port Loring is pretty much completed. Nice new pavement most of the way on Hwy 522 now. I continue to tell people, please do not rely on your GPS system to get you here, we have had more people tell us that there GPS leads them astray and gets confused about the Port Loring area. Just follow the good old fashioned directions on my website and you won't get lost!
The weather most of July has been real nice and hot, some very humid days, not much rain. The current lake water temp is about 81 degrees Fahrenheit, real nice for swimming. The slide at the beach has been getting alot of use!
July 1, 2010
Happy Canada Day! The weather is awesome today. Suppose to be real warm and sunny for the next week! Yipee, may even go swimming again. The young kids are in the water! 22: Walleye caught yesterday and several large Northern Pike.
June 28, 2010
We have two groups of people in right now catching lots of Bass and Walleye. The weather is a little cool right now, but very little rain. Calling for a nice weekend!
July 1, 2010
Happy Canada Day
June 16, 2010
Today it rained and rained all day, so we enjoyed the day off. The next week is suppose to be real nice again. No threat of fire danger here now.
If you are coming up in the next two weeks, there is major road construction in Port Loring and there is a back road detour. We would recommend that you avoid the area and come up to us via hwy #400 and #69 to #522 East. The detour is only to last the next 10 days, but the construction will continue through most of the summer.
June 5, 2010
We finally had some beautiful gentle rains that lasted through the night. It was much needed! Lots more fish caught this week. The black flies are pretty much gone which is nice for me. Lots more projects and fix up being done around the resort. Fixing up some docks, replacing blinds, fixing screens, fixing pot holes in the road... and the list goes on and on!
May 31, 2010
The weather has been a little better this last week. Still hot, but not insane. We have been swimming pretty much every day. We still haven't had much rain to speak of and the fire hazard rating has been moved from High to Extreme which now means no camp fires at all. We are hoping to get some rain soon.
The new dock at Cottage #7 is now complete. This will make it much better for people on the beach as the old cottage #7 dock is now part of the beach. This gives more room for sun bathers.
We have some regulars in this week and the fishing has really turned back on with the cooler temps. I'll be posting some pics on photo of the week shortly. We are having a nice Pickerel dinner tonight complements of Chris and Gloria, thanks guys!
May 24, 2010
We went for our first swim today. It was really nice, the water temp is reading 71 F on the fish finder. The black flies are pretty much gone and since we are dry as a bone here there really aren't any mosquitos to speak of either. Its really nice. Its too hot here to work past about 1:00pm here otherwise you roast from heat exhaustion. So we spent the afternoon swimming today. This weekend we had some nice Pickerel and Pike caught. Not all were so lucky, but the fishing really came on last night and this morning.
May 21, 2010
What a nice week its been here, no rain in site and we really need it. It has been between 26-29C here the last few days which is helping to get rid of the black flies. The coming week looks pretty much the same. I think we will be swimming soon. Neighbours have been in swimming already. We are under a High Fire Hazzard rating here still and it will likely go to extreme this week if we do not receive rain.
Our lake level is normal for this time of year despite the fact that some other area lakes like Nippissing are still real low. We do not have a problem since we are controlled by a dam system.
May 15, 2010
Its been a pretty nice spring so far, just a few days of bad weather here and there. At least we are no longer under a fire ban in the area which is good news for cottagers. We have our first people in this weekend, lots of people out in the lake as I type this all fishing on this opening day of Pickerel and Northern Pike season. The weather is suppose to be fantastic here the next 7 days into next weekend. We have several cottages in next weekend.
May 12, 2010
Fishing opens this weekend!
April 11,2010
After a week of colder weather and rain, the lake level has come up to normal now. Work on the new dock is on hold at the moment till it warms up again. Still doing some yard work. We have the water turned on to the new building already. Just hesitating a bit on the other cottages to make sure its not going to be too cold.
Apr 3rd, 2010
Today the temp reach 28C and it was very hot. I was doing some raking for about 5 hrs and I think I actually got a little heat exhaustion. At least the bugs are not here yet! But expecting a cold front to come through, high winds and rain tonight so I'm sure that will bring them out. We desperately need the rain, so not complaining.
Apr 2nd, 2010
Well I've had my feet in the water for the last two days as we work on the dock we are building. Its a little frigid yet. But ok with the warm weather.
Apr Fools, 2010
With the nice dry warm weather we are having the area is currently under a fire ban. The lake level is about 2 ft lower than in should be at this time. We are not as bad off as Lake Nipissing right now where the water level is about 5 ft below where it should be. Some places in North Bay the docks are about 50ft away from the water line. I'm sure it will all come up once we start getting some spring rain.
Mar 21, 2010
Well, with the warm temps these last couple of weeks, all of the snow is completely gone. The ice is almost out of the lake, just a thin layer remains and is out from shore several feet now. We actually went for our first canoe ride yesterday. I've been hoping to see the moose come meandering through the yard again like they did a few days ago but haven't seem them.
Mar 12, 2010
We are will be opening for business on May 15th this year, that is when the Pickeral season opens. The May long weekend isn't until the following weekend, but we have decided to open with the fishing!
Mar 11, 2010
Most of the snow is melted. There are still a few piles here and there. The lake is taking on that greyish colour, which means it might not be so safe. Frost is coming out of the ground and heaving everything. Our road is a mess!
Mar 9, 2010
Temps of plus 8 to 12 C here this week. Real nice. Snow is melting quickly.
Feb 21, 2010
If you have ever been on google earth there has been a recent update and the Hwy #522 corridor is now available in street view! I was shocked to see that you can actually see a street view of our area. If you click a ways past the 4 corners in Loring, you can see NLR sign and the entrance to our road. I have given them our gps co-ordinates and some photos of the resort but that has not been updated as of yet.

Is everyone enjoying the Olympics as much as we are? wow, wish I was there to get in on the Olympic spirit. My lucky brother won a trip there and will get to see both gold medal hockey games!
Feb 15, 2010
Just back from vacation here, had a great time. Nice to get some sunshine and warm weather!
Jan 24, 2010
So far it has been a relatively mild winter here with not a whole lot of snow. Enough to play in, but not enough to shovel roofs, for which we are thankful. Yesterday we were skating on the lake on Phil's big skating track he managed to make by clearing the snow with the ATV. Its not for the faint of heart as I think it is bigger than an Olympic sized oval. It was a beautiful sunny day here and there were lots of people out enjoying the day, ice fishing, snowmobiling and having bon fires. And of course an ice cold beer straight from the snow fridge completes the day!
Tonight and overnight we are bracing ourselves for some freezing rain and then snow that is expected. Hopefully we will not get much.
Jan 9, 2010
Northern Lights is now on Facebook! Yes thats right we have finally got with the times. If you are on look our page up. Be patient as I slowly build the page up with info and photos. Its not an easy task when you are on dial up connection still!
Jan 8, 2010
Time sure fly's, we are almost in the 2nd wk of Jan already. So far we are having an awesome winter. Just a nice amount of snow, nothing too crazy. And its staying cold, no silly thaws ruining our ice and flooding our basements. I can take the cold and the sunshine any day, I hope it stays like the for the next while
Jan 2nd, 2010
Happy New Year! Wow another year, another decade has passed. We wish everyone a safe and happy new year filled with many blessings and much health.
Well, the lake is frozen over nicely. We think about 10 inches of ice or so. Although we haven't seen much sled action on it yet, our friends on Lake Nipissing already have their fish huts out and are ready to go. This is the first year in a couple of years that we have had such nice perfect ice this early in the season. It would make a perfect skating rink this year too. Now if only I could skate.
December 20, 2009
Merry Christmas everyone! I hope that you remember the true meaning of xmas and that you all get to spend some quality time with the people you love. Have a safe and happy and healthy New Year!
December 4th, 2009
Well we finally have our first significant snowfall. I had to break down and put the snow tires on the car. But not before having my first hair raising drive from North Bay! I managed to start my xmas shopping this week, it was pretty crazy at the mall, but I managed to get our unscathed and without shooting anyone.
On Dec 2nd, Phil had his last Sail of the year before pulling the boat out. Yes he had to brush the snow off to do it. And with the water level being really low now had to be careful not to go too close to the edge. The water level is alway lowered 3 to 4 ft every winter as controlled by the damn system. I think it is lower this year than we've ever seen it. But it never fails in the spring it always goes way up again and sometimes goes over our docks.
November 13th, 2009
Happy Friday the 13th! We sure have been enjoying this great weather this last week and half. I got my wish for dryer weather. Still more to come I hear. I wonder if we are in for a mild winter this year. I've been able to get alot of raking done around here which will save time in the spring. We even managed to sneak in a couple of Sails. The sail boat is the only thing left in the water now. As long as the weather holds we'll leave it in for a while yet.
October 23, 2009
Yes it has been a long time since I've upated this. I hope everyone had a nice thanksgiving with there families. We have had quite a busy end to our season. Lots of last minute bookings for September and October. In addition we have been busy doing some much needed renos on our house. We have also had family health issues and have had to make several trips to southern ontario.
We are officially closed for the season and as usual we thank all of our loyal repeat customers that make it such a joy for us to be here when we see you each summer. Even though we are closed we are still here and accepting new reservations for 2010. The 2010 rates will be posted shortly on the website. Lets hope that the weather next year is alot better than it was this year. We need lots of sunshine and dryer weather please! As I write this it is raining cats and dogs here and I think trying to snow. We are not ready for that yet.
September 21, 2009
We have now had 20 days of in a row of nice weather and no rain. Suppose to rain here overnight though. Things are slowing now and we have various projects underway for the fall. The leaves are really changing on the trees now although still lots to go yet.
September 12, 2009
Here we are into our 12th day of nothing but sunshine and clear blue sky's. The forecast for the next week looks the same. There has been rain above us and below us, but we seem to be in this little protected pocket. Why not check out our last minute specials page and come on up for a visit!
September 7, 2009
Wow! What a great weekend and past two weeks. Not a drop of rain and nothing but sunshine! Beautiful clear nights, great for bon fires, no bugs! We sure are enjoying this little bit of summer weather that we didn't get in July or August. Swimming is still great right now too. The water temp today was 73 degrees. Lots of people in swimming.
September 2, 2009
Have you stayed with us recently? Why not sign our guestbook? Let other people know how your experience was with us!
September 1, 2009
Wow finally some beautiful weather. Nothing but sunshine and clear blue skies forecast for the next 8 days! Fall is such a beautiful time of year here. no bugs, nice weather, the lake is still warm enough to swim. I think it is my favorite time. Once the leaves start to change colour which is a few weeks away yet, it is a spectacular site.
August 29, 2009
Lots of rain here today, but it is suppose to clear and be nice this week. We are looking forward to that. The evenings are a little cooler now and are perfect for nightly bon fires. No bugs! There is a hint of colour change in some of the maple leaves. If you have never seen the fall colours up here they are spectacluar. Why not come and visit us for a quick get away this fall?
August 27, 2009
The construction is nearly all complete on hwy #522 coming from the East to us. Now you can enjoy the nice new smooth pavement! yipee!
August 25, 2009
Have you got your Boater's Licence yet? In September everyone operating a boat must have their Boat Operators card. Its simple and easy to get, just follow the link on our Home Page or our Fishing Page.
August 24, 2009
The weather expected to be nice here again for the next couple of weeks. However it has been cooler at nights already. Its starting to feel like fall a bit. But the plus side is there is no bugs which is nice. Its great sitting around a camp fire and not being bothered by mosquitos.
The Sudbury Music Festival is coming up this weekend and it looks like its going to be a great one. If you are in the area or coming up to see us you might want to check it out. The link is http://sudburysummerfest.vianet.ca/
August 20, 2009
We thanked our lucky stars today. We had a torential down pour of rain, probably about 4 inches in a matter of 15 minutes or so. It completely washed out our roads and washed all the gravel onto the dock and into the water. At the end we felt a blast of warm strange air and it got windy for a minute and I thought this isn't good. Apparently there was some tornado damage in Arnstein and Restoule which is not far from here. We didn't have any tree damage at all and for that we are thankful.
August 10, 2009
Finally we are getting our share of warm nice weather here. The temps have been great for swiimming and the stable weather has brought the fishing back on.
August 6, 2009
Have you thought about your 2010 vacation yet? We are getting alot of calls for next summer already so if you are thinking about it, now is the time. If you still want to get away this summer we have a few openings the last couple weeks of August, check out the last minute deals page for details.
The fall is a great time to travel as well. The fall colours are spectacular up here and usually start about mid September. Maybe we will even get the summer we have been waiting for in September! Wouldn't that be nice. Usually the weather is still nice in September and there aren't any bugs. Thats why its my favorite month.
July 22, 2009
There are alot of great events happening in and around the area for people to check out. If your looking for a unique dinning experience check out Renee's cafe in South River, just a short drive from us. They get in alot of great music acts that you can enjoy while eating dinner. I usually keep a schedule of coming acts right in our store. Then there is the North Bay waterfront music festival July 31st-Aug 2nd. They always get alot of great bands. This year they are featuring the Tragically Hip and Simple Plan. For more information check out their website: http://www.symphonyofsound.com/
July 21, 2009
Today my nephew Nick and I went on a one day canoe trip. It was an awesome trip. It took us about 5 1/2 hours but we took our time and stopped a couple times for a swim and lunch. From our lake we paddled to Toad lake then into Wilson lake and then did a short portage back into our lake Little Long Lake. Its a great trip for anyone just looking for a day trip. The weather was absolutely perfect and the winds were light, we couldn't have picked a better day.
July 17, 2009
I hear on the weather network that the last half of July and August are going to be warmer normer temps. That would be nice. This last couple weeks its been a little cooler than it should be. It makes it nice for working and sleeping and fishing. But not so much for swimming. However that didn't stop the kids this week swimming every chance they got.
Just a note, if you are coming up from Hwy#69 to see us, make sure you take "Northern Lights Road" off of Hwy #522 and not our neighbours road before us "Labrech Drive". Alot of people have been turning immediately when they see the Ontario Road sign, you must drive about another 500 feet to our drive way. Look for the Canadian Flag and our sign right at the road. The reason I am saying this is our neighbours road is not a nice road to drive on, its very hilly and not fun for people to drive on and a little scary.
July 10, 2009
If you are coming to Northern Lights this weekend, you may want to consider taking Hwy #69 through Parry Sound to us. Hwy #522 between us and Hwy #11 is under construction and is quite a mess!
This week we had some fishermen go to one of our back lakes, Etta Lake and had Bass hitting there line the minute they put it in. This lake is rarely fished and the bass are quite plentiful. There are also some good size Northern Pike in there also.
July 6, 2009
The weather has cleared and we are enjoying some nice days. The weather man keeps calling for rain but we are not getting anything more than a few spits. The evenings are nice and cool for sleeping and NO BUGS!! Very nice for evening camp fires right now.
We have alot of Bass fishermen in this week and they are catching lots. Even some new people that have never fished before are having a ball just fishing right off the dock.
July 1, 2009
Happy Canada Day! We have decided not to have fire works this year. It is just too wet. This week there has been a low front that keeps hovering over Ontario. We have had lots of rain and cooler temps. It is suppose to clear out by the Long weekend. We have several cottagers in this week and despite the weather they are still catching some fish.
We still have a couple spots left for the long weekend if you are thinking of a last minute cotttage rental.
June 19, 2009
We are in for a heat wave here this week!
June 15, 2009
Well I had my first swim on Saturday, it was a refreshing 65 F. Today I went for my second swim and it was up to 68 F!. It was actually quite nice.
June 8, 2009
Last week was an absolutely beautiful week weather wise. It allowed us to get alot of work done outdoors. Rain today expected for a couple days. The black flies are disapearing a bit finally. The water temperature is currently about 60 F, not too warm yet. This is good for the fishing! There was some nice size pickerel caught this week as well as a few pike.
June 1, 2009
We took a drive yesterday to the Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in Rosseau. It is an awesome place. They rehabilitate injured or sick animals and release them to the wild. In some instances they cannot be released and the sanctuary is their home. Aspen Valley makes every effort to create the most comfortable home for these animals that they can. For example a typical enclosure for a wolf is about 5 acres. As you can imagine the daily care, feeding, and up keep of the sanctuary is mind boggling. They are a non profit organization that rely's solely on donations. Not just financial donations but things like old blankets and towels, dog food, straw and anything else that helps to make the animals more comfortable. If you are coming up to the area it is worth a look. I have a link to their website in my Areas of Interest page.
May 30, 2009
Frost overnight, woke up to snow, then sun, then hail, then sun, then rain. Forecast is looking better for this week, suppose to be sunny all week!
May 29, 2009
Ok ok already with the rain! I take back what I said about not getting much rain. Its been raining here non stop ever since! Suppose to clear up for the weekend.
May 27, 2009
It rained a bit over night here and a bit today. Not much. Last week we managed to get out on our new sailboat to try out the rigging. Last fall we bought a 17ft Siren. Since we haven't sailed or rigged a boat for about 6 years we had no idea what we were doing. After a few trials and scary moments I think we have it figured out now. It is quite the challenge to sail something like that in our lake with all the wind shifts caused by the land and the trees. Especially trying to sail it back into the dock not using a motor at all. Phil likes the challenge, me not as much. I tend to freak out. Oh well, we have to have some fun once in a while.
May 25, 2009
Fishing continues to be great here this week, lots of Northern Pike and Pickerel being caught. The bugs are bad so if you are coming up soon, bring some bug gear. We also have some on hand in case you forget.
Phil is continues to do all sorts of projects. He just finished leveling cottage #3 and tiling all around to take the water away. It was something we wanted to do last year but with the exceptional amount of rain we had it was never dry enough. Believe it or not we haven't had much rain this spring and we are currently under an extreme high risk of fire alert for the area.
May 18, 2009
For those of you that check out the 'what's new' regularly, you might notice that there are some postings missing. Thats technology for you, I can't get them back and I don't remember what I said yesterday let alone a month ago!
This weekend was our opening weekend. As per usual the weather was not good, lots of rain on saturday. Sunday and monday are nice but unseasonably cold. The good news is this has held off the black flies a bit. Despite the weather we were over half full which was great. We have a group of regular guys that love to fish for Pickerel and that is there pictures you will see today on photo of the week. There first day here they caught about 18 fish, mostly pickerel (walleye) and some northern pike and crappy. On Sunday they caught a 3.5lb blue pickerel which is pictured in photo of the week. This is a first for us seeing a blue pickerel from our lake.
April 10, 2009
Spring is in the air again this weekend. Finally, after we got our last big blast of winter last weekend. Our snow was pretty much gone then we got 6 inches of heavy wet snow. What a sloppy mess our road is. We had been working on building a new cage and dock at cottage #6 (just for you Joe), when suddenly the water level rose to above the docks. It has started to recede now so we will be able to get back at it. But with the water level rising so much we discovered today that the dock at cottage #5 lifted off its cage support and floated over about 4 feet. So now I guess we have two docks to fix! Oh well at least it didn't happen in the middle of summer. With the sunny weather we are getting anxious to get outside and start raking and cleaning up the yard as soon as the ground dries a bit more.
Happy Easter to you and all your families!
March 14, 2009
Hope everyone is keeping well this winter. We are getting anxious for it to be over and get outside to do some work. The snow is melting good now and there isn't alot left except in the bush. There is still lots of ice on the lake though. But you know if the chipmunks are out of hibernation spring will be here soon. We are looking forward to seeing all the regular customers again that are begining to feel like family now. Looking forward to welcoming you all back.

2009 Summer Accomodation schedule is now available! Check it out under the accommodation tab.
Jan 30th, 2009
Wow the winter is just flying by here. Most people probably wouldn't say that with all the cold and snow for most everywhere this year. We can't complain too much though. For the most part we are enjoying the winter. Lots of projects on the go. Its nice to have the new workshop to work in this year. And the snow shovelling keeps up quite busy. We have already done all the roof's once before xmas and its looking like we might have to do them all again. Yipee.
Dec 7th, 2008
The full brunt of winter has decended upon up early this year. With snow falling almost everday since mid November. You will see from photo of the week that we have lots. Not complaining we just hope it stays cold this year and doesn't thaw in the middle of January again like last year. The ice is starting to form on the lake now which will make the snowmobiliers and the ice fisherman happy. Time to get those snow tires on the car soon. I had an unpleasant encouter with a deer on the highway last week. Lucky for me I wasn't going fast and both the deer and my car came away relatively unscathed.
Oct 26th, 2008
Well the camp is all closed up and tucked in for the winter now. Last Tuesday the skies opened up and the white stuff fell out. Leaving us with about 3 inches of snow. We were not prepared for that! This put an abrupt stop to the raking of leaves.
